Golf CourseAnvil Creek possesses all of the qualities and attributes necessary for it to become one of the great golfing experiences in the country. The majestic northerly views from the Clubhouse site, down the 18th fairway and over the adjoining vineyards to the mountains, will set the scene for not only the golf course but for the atmosphere of the Anvil Creek community. Undulating land, existing creeks meandering through the course, large areas of remnant vegetation and the low density of the proposed development surrounding the golf course, all combine to form the ideal framework for a classic golf course to challenge and stimulate golfers of every standard. Course DesignInternationally renowned golf course designer and PGA Seniors Tour player, Australian Graham Marsh, designer of the course, has taken careful consideration of the regional climate, construction logistics, on going maintenance costs and environmental constraints and opportunities offered by the site. It is only with a full understanding and appreciation of these criteria that the course will inherit true long term integrity.
The winner of more than 60 tournaments internationally and successful on all five of the world's major tours, Graham has been one of Australia's most successful golfing ambassadors since turning professional in l969. Graham's high personal profile as a golf professional is mirrored in his attention to detail and dedication to excellence as a course designer. With the hillside Clubhouse acting as the central “landmark” for the site, Graham Marsh and his team have planned the golf course to play as two returning nines - the front nine playing out and back to the east and south of the site alongside Anvil Creek, and the back nine playing initially to the west and then looping back towards the northern corner of the site before returning home to the south up a broad valley to the Clubhouse. Dynamic bunkering, creek views, mature vegetation and dramatic fairway shapes will set the scene and quickly reveal the true qualities of this golf course. Each ‘nine’ has a special character of it’s own and every hole will provide new and different experiences. Playing through dramatic landforms, along the fringes of creeks, through copses of remnant eucalypt and casuarina forests, beside vineyards and surrounded by rural views, it will not be possible to forget the intrigue and charm of the majestic Australian landscape that will such an integral part of a round of golf at Anvil Creek. SustainabilityA major criteria for the golf course is that it places the minimum possible demands upon the local ecology and respects the local and regional environment. The irrigation system will be state of the art. In order to minimise water usage each sprinkler will have individual ‘valve in head’ control connected to a weather station to ensure highly controlled watering to the golf course and to allow no over spray into adjoining native areas. The contouring of the golf course will direct all water from the fairways through nutrient stripping ponds prior to release into the creek. This same system has been utilised successfully at many of the new generation golf courses such as Twin Creeks near Sydney and North Lakes in Brisbane. Typically larger areas such as fairways will be piped to nutrient stripping ponds while smaller areas such as stand alone tees or greens may be edge planted with vegetation such as Lomandra sp. or Dianella sp. to intercept and treat any runoff. Turf grass selection for the many components of the golf course will be undertaken in association with an accredited Turf Grass Research Institute after careful evaluation of soils, rainfall, temperature and humidity data for the local area. Drought tolerant grass species will be selected for the golf course and the roughs will be revegetated in native grasses.
