Tourism

Anvil Creek is an important new development proposed for the Hunter Valley that combines a vineyard, international standard golf course, tourist resort, residential homes, education precinct specializing in viticulture, hospitality and golf course management, plus a small commercial development.

Located close to the village of Greta the Anvil Creek site was once an army training camp and, in the immediate post WWII period, a migrant settlement camp. The development will enable the site’s history to be interpreted and celebrated, and Anvil Creek’s vision will add a new tourism and residential lifestyle destination to the Hunter Valley.

Hunter Valley Wine Country

The Hunter Valley Wine Country is currently a 2-hour drive north of Sydney. Set in the Hunter River valley, between the Brokenback Range and the Barrington Tops, the area now has more than a hundred wineries and cellar doors and is known for its award winning wines. The vineyards also boast a number of excellent restaurants and cafes, good accommodation, conference facilities and a variety of entertainment options including the Hunter Valley Gardens and hot air ballooning. The valley now also supports a burgeoning olive industry with cold pressed olive oil and other olive products.

The golf course at Anvil Creek will be the third international standard, signature course in the vineyard area of the Hunter Valley.  Its addition to the golf experience will enable the wine country to also promote itself as a golf tourism destination.

Research has indicated that golf tourism visitors spend 60% more than average visitors to a region and stay 50% longer. [source - Tourism Victoria]  Anvil Creek will enable the Hunter vineyard area to reap similar benefits.

The Hunter Valley Wine Country has all the attributes to support successful golf tourism. It is:

  • Located within 2 hours drive of a major city and easily accessible to overseas and interstate visitors
  • Within easy distance to a major regional centre with good infrastructure
  • Already renowned for its excellent food and wine experience
  • An area with many other outdoor activities, such as walking, bike and horse riding, and close to white water rafting, ballooning and other excitements.

Anvil Creek will be the catalyst that the Hunter Valley wine country needs to become a major golf tourism destination.

A New Gateway

The proposed extension to the F3 Freeway will pass immediately adjacent to Anvil Creek and shorten the journey from Sydney 90 minutes. The primary entrance and exit for the Hunter Valley Wine Country is located at the southern end of the site and will become the gateway to the vineyards. Anvil Creek has been designed to enhance the arrival experience and reinforce the rural character of the area which is of great importance to visitors.

The development has been conceived to support the tourism economy in the region, to develop employment opportunities and to encourage future residents to build and support local businesses especially in the Greta area. Initial estimates indicate the proposed development will create 235 full time tourism jobs and 459 jobs during the construction phase.
